University of the Witwatersrand WCCO-ASRI Civic Leadership Programme 2021

The Wits WCCO-ASRI Civic Leadership programme aims to develop young people for careers in the civil society and government sectors, and therefore recruits individuals who are socially and politically active in their communities. The programme seeks to recruit young people who aspire, in different spheres, to drive socio-economic change in South Africa, and are committed to working towards a just, equal and prosperous society. 

Because of the physical distancing constraints necessary during the Covid19 pandemic, the programme will be delivered online via Zoom webinars and breakaway rooms from 26 July 2021 until 30 July 2021.

Programme structure

The online component of the programme is 5 half days-long, from 26 July 2021 to 30 July 2021, and fellows are required to be in attendance (virtually, via Zoom) Monday to Thursday from 9h00 – 13h00.

Core tenets: The mission of the programme is the building of a social justice mind-set, with a particular focus on bettering the socio-economic conditions of people in South Africa. Emphasis is also placed on integrity, respect and tolerance.

Themes covered: Governance, law and social justice; leadership; understanding government; NGOs and civil society; economics and development; and ethics and values.

The eligibility requirements to be considered for the program are as follows:

Community & leadership experience: Individuals should be active in their community, have some form of leadership experience and show potential for being a change agent in South Africa

Academic: Students must have completed at least four semesters of university study successfully, with post-graduate or other additional qualifications being an advantage.

Attendance requirement: To be eligible for the programme, you must be able to be in attendance- Monday-Friday from 9h00 to 15h00, from 26 July 2021 until 30 July 2021

Alumni requirements: Upon completion of the programme, participants are expected to remain active within the Alumni Network of ASRI.

Closing date & interviews: Applications will be screened as they are received, and will close on 04 June 2021. If you do not hear from us by 10 June 2021, please kindly consider your application unsuccessful.
